The German group at the September Basketball European Championship could be richer. As the French medium RMC Sport reports, Joel Embbiid wants to appear for the national team of France.
Embiid originally comes from Cameroon, but had already expressed his interest in running for France in the past because he also has family there. Now he has launched the administrative procedures to actually get French citizenship.
At the end of June, Empbiid wanted to travel to France to sign the necessary papers. It would be the first time that the French “naturalize” a player, one player per team is allowed via FIBA regulations. The reigning NBA top scorer would then join a team that, among others, has several NBA players in his ranks with Nicolas Batum, Rudy Gobert and Evan Fournier.
If the process is finalized in time, Embiid could participate in the European Championship in September. France belongs there to Group B, which performs their games in Cologne and in which Germany, Slovenia, Lithuania, Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina are also located.

However, Embiid is currently injured after suffering an eye socket fracture and a slight concussion in the series against the Raptors. Without the 28-year-old, Philadelphia played game 1 in the second round series against Miami.
